7-9 How do you use latitude and longitude?
SWBAT: Explain how hemispheres, latitude, longitude, meridians, and parallels are all related.
Parallel - horizontal line on a map or globe that circles Earth from east to west at intervals starting at the equator.
Meridian - line on a map or globe running from the North Pole to the South Pole along Earth’s surface
Latitude - distance in degrees north or south of the equator
Longitude - measurement in degrees east or west of the prime meridian
• The equator divides Earth’s surface into northern and southern hemispheres.
• The distance in degrees a place is north or south of the equator is its latitude.
• Meridians are imaginary lines that run from pole to pole; the prime meridian, or 0° meridian, runs through Greenwich, England.
• The distance in degrees a place is west or east of the prime meridian is its longitude.
• Every place on Earth has its own latitude and longitude.
• Latitude and longitude can be used by meteorologists to give the locations of some storms.
