6-3 What are the layers of the atmosphere?
SWBAT: Name and describe the layers of the atmosphere.
troposphere - lowest layer of the atmosphere
stratosphere - second layer of the atmosphere
mesosphere - third layer of the atmosphere
thermosphere - upper layer of the atmosphere
• The atmosphere is made up of four basic layers.
• The troposphere is the lowest layer; the air you breathe is part of the troposphere. Weather takes place in the troposphere.
• The stratosphere is the second layer. The ozone layer forms part of the stratosphere; it protects living things from damaging ultraviolet rays from the Sun.
• The mesosphere and thermosphere make up the next two layers. Concentrations of ions are found in these two layers.
